The play's dramatic love story is the mean of the entire plot but perfectly hidden beyond the foreground story presented by the protagonist. Crystal Skillman wrote an incredibly realistic development of events ascending towards a climax that manages to involve the spectators for the entire show.
Is fundamental to consider also the performance of Lily Ali-Oshatz, who plays the role of the magician, as a major strength point of the entire play, as her acting was strongly related to the real-time discovery of the events in conjunction with the audience.

Instead of realism, audiences are given fantasy through which reality can be seen more clearly. OPEN is a lovely one-woman show about the intimate metaphors magic provides us for interpreting our loves, our lives and ourselves.

The play aims to raise awareness among people about the injustices and inequalities of contemporary society. In particular, the focus of the show is related to the discrimination of the LGBTQ communities and violence against minorities. In the play this theme becomes more evident as the protagonist’s personal trauma comes out.
Some further insights were made by the writer, the director and the actress, just after the event of the show at Teatro del Lido. As it was said, this play was originally meant to be staged across the U.S - where making awareness and reducing inequalities among the population is a crucial and yet fundamental act. Fortunately, because of the immediate success, the possibility of an overseas tour was given to the play and its creator as part of the OnStage! Festival event.
Discrimination and social injustices happen in the entire world, so everyone must be informed and educated about how to relate with others in order to eliminate discriminatory policies, practices and ideologies.
